The Instagram 24-hour rule, explained for business owners
Why some replies send and others don't, what the human-agent exception covers, and how to keep reminders arriving when the window has closed.

If you have ever wondered why a tool could answer a client instantly on Monday but refused to message them on Thursday, this is why.
The rule
Meta lets a business send automated messages to someone for 24 hours after that person’s last message. The clock restarts every time they write again. Outside that window, automated sending stops.
The reasoning is simple: the client started the conversation, so the business can answer. Days later, an unsolicited message is marketing, and Instagram is not a marketing channel by default.
The human exception
There is a second allowance, usually called the human-agent tag. A person — not an automation — may reply up to seven days after the client’s last message.
This is genuinely useful. It means a real reply typed on Monday still sends on Wednesday. It is not a loophole for automation, and tools that use it to send bulk messages are putting the connected account at risk.
Comments are the third path
A comment on your post or reel lets you send that person exactly one direct message, within seven days. That is why “comment PRICE” works at all. After they reply, the ordinary 24-hour window applies.
Where this bites in real life
Reminders for appointments booked in advance. Someone books on the 1st for the 10th. By the 9th, the window has been closed for over a week, so no automated reminder can be sent on Instagram.
The fix is not a clever workaround, it is a second channel. Collect an email at the moment of booking, and send the reminder there when the window is shut. Ask in a way that sounds like service rather than data collection: “What’s the best email for your confirmation?”
Announcements and offers. A broadcast can only reach people who messaged you in the last 24 hours. That is a much smaller list than your follower count, and any tool suggesting otherwise is either ignoring the rules or relying on tags it shouldn’t.
Win-backs. “We miss you, here’s 20% off” to a client from three months ago is not possible through the API. Email or SMS is the right tool.
How to work with it rather than against it
- Collect an email during booking. One question, asked at the right moment, covers every later message.
- End conversations with an open question. A client who replies keeps their own window open.
- Use broadcasts for genuinely timely things — a cancellation today, a gap this week — where the 24-hour audience is the right audience anyway.
- Treat pacing as protection. Staying comfortably under the hourly limits is how accounts stay in good standing.
